As far as Maggette is concerned, you havent' watched many Clippers game's huh? In case you haven't noticed he is averaging 20 pts and 6 boards per game. Remember he came out after his freshman year, and despite he protests, he has worked on his game and become a good player.
hell, its about time! how long he been in the fricking league? and he was strictly a 7 & 7 (points and rebounds) guy until Eldon showed up...
This is 5th season. He averaged 16.8 points per game last year. He was a younger, unpolished player before Elton Brand showed up. Even though I felt he should have stayed in school, he has proven that he has the work ethic to improve his game.
You're acting like Fakener when playing center (what position you think he played when he played alongside Felton Spencer in Minnesota??) was stoppign those guys.
Maybe you're forgetting how heraled Fakener was coming out of school.
So to hold you own against someone means you have to stop them? Hell Mutombo couldn't stop Shaq, Zo, or Mourning, and you expect Laettner to do it?
Oh and I remember how much hype Laettner had coming out of school, but I also can seperate a college career and a pro career. He was not a bust in my book, before the achilles injury.
Trub... but that's my point also... A lot of these Duke players... notably Parks, Duhon and Battier weren't even great college players but you could never tell the way their balls are always being massaged by the media. That just disgusts me. Yeah Battier was a good defender but Boozer was the best player on that team (even though I didn't think he'd be a great pro) yet he was an afterthought. Battier is barely decent as a pro... he is a homeless man's (not even a poor man's) Scottie Pippen at this point. .
Battier is a simply caught in the numbers game. He will never be a great player, and I think I mentioned that when there was debate about him being the number one pick when he was drafted. But, he could start for many of the teams in this league. And I believe he could put up 15-16 pts a game and play good defense.
Battier started losing minutes before Hubie Brown and his 10 man rotation. Hell there are a lot of players that could put up 15-16 points in the "right" situation. Look at what Bobby Sura is doing for your Hawks right now.
Besides if you are going to assess Laettner by what he did on the court before his injury you have to assess Battier in the same manner. No way was he worthy of the #1 pick and you are right that there was talk about just that. It was a weak draft of course but still...

Battier could put up 15 to 16 points for many teams in the league. Bob Sura can't. He needs an uptempo style of offense because he is not that good in a slow paced one. Battier on the otherhand knows his limitations and can hit the open shot. He should never be the 1st option, hell barely a 2nd option, but he can be a pretty good third.
As far as being the number one pick, I knew that Battier didn't deserve it despite how weak the draft was. In my opinion he was never going to be a star, but just a solid player. Pretty much in the same way I view Tayshun Prince. In a stronger draft class, I don't even think Battier would have been drafted in the top 10 or 15.
Kali, I see that your rank has gone up to Lt. Commander now. I was trying to get into some of the Lt. Commander only rooms that you were in, but they were always full.
Lets be realistic here. Tay is more of a contributor in 1 and quarter seasons for the Pistons than Batty has and when you consider that Tay was a LATE first round pick and is a starter then it's pretty much a wash.
I do believe the comparison is a good one but not based on their drafting positions.
I don't wanna seem like I'm being hard on Batty because I've seen him since he was in High school and he's a good guy. But a LOTTERY pick, hell no..

The numbers are very close Marz. I know it's impossible to do, but in my opinon if they traded places, the result would be the same.
Steve Nash didn't suck his first two seasons...he was stuck in the rookie hell that was the Suns along with others like
JAYSON WILLIAMS
MIKE FINLEY
STEPHON JACKSON
TIM PERRY joking
just to name a few...
only Amari and Marion has over come that jinx while still in Suns unis...

Actually I should have said he his first 4-5 seasons, because the sucking carried over to the Mavs as well.

Yeah I got my cookie again... I have two other names that I'm working on getting there too... and I'm right there on the threshold with both of em. I think that in general I'm too good for the Lt. Games now... every time I go play in one with one of my alternate names it's too easy.
I started playing Crossroads also... and it's pretty fun... fast paced, high action map... I get mopped in the Lt Commander games on it though because there are so many hiding spots and I'm still learning the layout. Next time you see me on come in as a spectator just to let me know you're there and that way I'll be able to add you to my friend list and look out for you also.

does it concern anyone that of the 65 teams that made the ncaa tournament, only four of them graduate more than 2/3rds of its players -- according to the way the NCAA calculates its graduation rates....
i read the discussion after i posed the question, and while there are some valid arguments on both sides about the quality of player at the pro level, it still doesn't dismiss the fact that they actually make the pros, unlike some other highly thought of programs (Indiana)....
look there are over 300 D1 schools, and only about 30 -40 new players on nba rosters each year -- making the pros is tough enuf, so putting 2 or three players a year on rosters -- to say nothing of playing 10+ years in the case of Laettner and Ferry speaks volumes... and don't forget the number former duke assistants who are either coaching or poised to start coaching...
you can be sure that if Duhon doesn't play in the NBA he has a coaching spot waiting for him...
i'm not crazy about Duke, and i mostly root against them.. i still have tremendous respect for the program and coach K for what they do with the people they get

Doesn't concern me in the least. Why should it? It's not me and if they don't harness the opportunity thats bestowed upon them, why should I care that they aren't??
What are you gonna shove in their faces the merits of graudating when they could carless themselves?? Wasted energy. Those people are there to hoop and no matter how well intentioned you are in saying, "you should graduate" if they don't want to, then it's not gonna happen..

Wow, so Duhon is a starter now (I think). Battier has emerged as a top defender (still not better than tay) the rest I feel exactly the same way.
