NDA= non disclosure agreement...

I imagine that Ray got tore off some money because Lewis did violate that clearly.

Ray Parker Jr.'s post-Raydio songs had a tendency to be inspired by (and had more than a passing rememblance to) then-recently released hit songs:

"The Other Woman" --> Rick Springfield's "Jesse Girl"

"I Still Can't Get Over Loving You" --> The Police's "Every Breath You Take"

"Ghostbusters" --> Huey Lewis & The News' "I Want A New Drug"

Parker produced the solo album for Randy Hall, whose lead single was "I've Been Watching You (Jamie's Girl)" and a few months later Parker came out with "Jamie."

Parker openly stated in interviews in the late '80s that he wanted and approached Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to produce songs for him. In fact, Parker's final hit song "She Needs To Get Some" was an obvious imtation of the Jam & Lewis-produced "Sensitivity" by Ralph Tresvant. Some believe that "I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone" was inspired by Patti Austin's "The Heat Of Heat," another Jam & Lewis-produced song.

Moreover, Parker stated in interviews that "The Other Woman" and "I Still Can't Get Over Loving You" were created with Springfield's and The Police's songs in mind. That what was led to the Huey Lewis lawsuit.

I finally watched Millie Jackson's last night. I hadn't heard of her until I was in high school and never heard her music until I was an adult. My mother did a good job keeping her from my ears (not so much with Too $hort, but she tried.) She was and is gorgeous and bold as hell. I love her episode.

RAY PARKER JR WAS TOUCHING ESPECIALLY BOUT HIS PARENTS

I KNEW HE HAD 4 BOYS - I THOUGHT THEY WERE ALL BY THE SAME WOMAN 2 BY 1 AND 2 BY THE WOMAN HE MARRIED SAYING IF HE HA TO DO IT ALL AGAIN HE WOULD MARRY HER - SO TOUCHING.

SAD ABOUT HIS PARENTS - BUT I LOVED HIS AND HE STILL LOOKS GOOD.

Good episode on Ray Parker Jr. I've honestly never heard of "Jack N Jill" or the Leo dude (where is he) that he got jerked for the credit of.

Cool he came back to The D also. The "20 Grand" was before my time but my parents used to go there all the time.

This guy is my kind of artist. Not that vocally talented (singers are a dime a dozen frankly and I've ALWAYS been more attracted to the producers anyways) but main could this guy create a drive a concept home. I had absolutely NO IDEA those guitar licks "Got to be real" were him.

Glad he's still doing well and this was yet another good Unsung as most of the facts about him AREN'T well known..

Jack & Jill was (is) one of my favorites. I think that's the one the first started me listening to Raydio.

"Jack and Jill" was Raydio's first song, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard R&B singles charts.

Leo Sayer was known for the songs "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing," the ballad "When I Need You" and his cover of "More Than I Can Say." You may have heard "When I Need You" on some adult contemporary radio stations, because it's one of those notably sappy ballads that gets frequent airplay on those formats.

I always found it odd when I hear some white people talk about Ray Parker Jr. as if he was a one-hit wonder because he had songs that were pop hits before "Ghostbusters:"

"Jack And Jill" -- No. 8
"You Can't Change That" -- No. 9
"A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do)" -- No. 4
"That Old Song" -- No. 21
"The Other Woman" -- No. 4
"I Still Can't Get Over Loving You" -- No. 12

Sheila E is STILL tight both visually and artistically. WOW!!

Sadly the run of Unsung's that doesn't end in excessive drug usage or death ends.

Next week is Ruff aka David Ruffin

Sheila E still draws a large audience.

I was so glad to hear there was no drug usage. Prince was having none of that! Laughing

I cannot wait to see to how the David Ruffin episode. I want to see if they tell the real story about where he died.

I didn't know Lynn Mabry was her co-manager. She has a long history as a singer with P-funk and Talking Heads.

I KNEW she looked familiar. Good looking out on that.

Also don't dare believe prince punk controlling ass ran some right Drug free operation or he didn't indulge himself. I agree I'm glad it wasn't yet another Unsung with drugs but IMO ALL people from the Bay have indulged at some point.

I doubt they go into the gory details of David's death. Word is they just came back from Europe, he had the money (what fuckin idiot let him get the groups money lol)wasin Philly went to get him a fix. Od'd and was left there. The money also wasn't on him (surprise)

SHEILA E WAS VERY GOOD. I KNOW HER BROTHERS WERE IN HER BAND BUT I DID NOT KNOW THAT WAS HER SISTER IN GLAMOUROUS LIFE.

I THOUGHT ABOUT GETTING ACUPUNCTURE AWHILE BACK. BUT AFTER I HEARD HER HORROR STORY. I'LL PASS.

GOOD SHOW.

HER BROTHER MICHAEL WAS THE ONE WHO GAVE UP HIS DAUGHTER NICOLE TO LIONEL RITCHIE, CAUSE HE AND HIS WIFE WERE ON DRUGS..SO LIONEL ADOPTED HER.

I'm still wondering (not really) how the musical director from this weekends' Academy Awards broadcast is "unsung". Laughing Laughing Laughing

ETA: Mea culpa...she wasn't the musical director, Hans Zimmer and Pharrell were the MDs. She was only the headlining performer.

David Ruffin

Wow...this was an episode for your ass. Confused Sad
David's family is still hurting behind his death.
This episode was pretty close to The Temptations movie. The things the movie left out was that David was married and left his wife for a white woman. The movie only hinted at the relationship and abuse of Tammi. This episode went into more details about his career after her fired from the Temps.

One of my favorite songs that David Ruffin sang lead on was "How I Wish That It Would Rain".

One question...where was his brother? He is alive...right? Question

Jimmy lives overseas..

the episode was a bit more flattering but having been at barbershops where David entered seeking attention growing up and knowing of some of the hanger ons. I can tell you David wasn't a nice guy by any means. He often stiffed studios and guys who went on the road with him.

The episode didn't highlight how him and Eddie created their own version of the Temps that was actually drawing more than the real Temps. The movie did profile this. That more than anything lead to the Rick James collaboration.

I'll say this though again normally I'm NOT a fan of "husky" church voices but I'll make an exception with David. We had a thread here where we talked about him..

I didn't know about "Walk away from love" but as I mentioned in that thread. Thats a damn good song. He did deserve an "UNSUNG" feature but all the negative ills he brought on himself..
