Macklemore, White Privilege, and The Grammy For Best Rap Album

This Sunday, the 56th Annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS. If Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist wins the Grammy for Best Rap Album, it’ll be both the best and worst night of Macklemore’s career. Macklemore is nominated for a total of seven awards, including Best New Artist, Song of The Year, and even Album of The Year. But no award this year is more important than Best Rap Album. Why? Because in that category he faces off against rap’s golden boy, Kendrick Lamar, and his universally acclaimed rap masterpiece, good kid, m.A.A.d. city.

Despite the fact that there’s three other nominees, only Macklemore and Kendrick’s albums are also facing off for Album of the Year1, which means one or the other will certainly win Best Rap Album. (Sorry Kanye, Drake, and Jay Z). Kendrick is also nominated for seven awards, and Kendrick is signed to a major label, while Macklemore is an independent artist—so you might think Kendrick has a better shot at winning. But cynical rap fans know better.

Kendrick is black and Macklemore is white. This, at a time when Uncle Scarface is warning that hip-hop is becoming whitewashed and the Grammy voters are debating whether or not Macklemore is even a rapper. If Macklemore wins Best Rap Album, it’ll be a classic example of white privilege at work. Should Macklemore win, it won’t be because he’s a better rapper than Kendrick (he’s not) or because he made a better album than Kendrick (he didn’t). It will be because he’s safe and white and the kind of guy out-of-touch Grammy voters could get behind. This is the double-edged sword for Macklemore. Winning Best Rap Album would no doubt make him a bigger star, but it would also, very likely, make him into a major rap villain.

Macklemore knows this too. He has already tried to preempt the backlash.

“We’re up against Kendrick, who made a phenomenal album,” said Macklemore, to The Source. “If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, hip-hop is going to be heated. In terms of [that category], I think it should go to Kendrick. He’s family. TDE is family, and I understand why hip-hop would feel like Kendrick got robbed [if he didn’t win].”

Macklemore is right. And rap fans come into every Grammys season expecting to get screwed over. There's a traditionally strained relationship at play. Over the years, hip-hop has been snubbed so many times by the Grammys that last year Complex made a 23-slide feature about it. In fact, the award in question—Best Rap Album—didn’t even exist until 1996. In other words, it was only invented after some of the genre’s greatest achievements—Boogie Down Productions' Criminal Minded, Wu-Tang Clan's Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory, Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back—had come and gone without so much as a nod.

It's an open topic of discussion. On It Takes A Nation’s “Terminator X to the Edge of Panic” Chuck D asked, “Who gives a fuck about a Goddamn Grammy?” Disdain for the Grammys is a long-held ethos in hip-hop. Hip-hop's not alone in this. Serious fans of many genres believe the Grammys get it wrong all the time, thanks in part to a flawed voting process (as Complex’s Senior Editor and voting member of the Recording Academy Rob Kenner recently explained.) But with rap, there's an ever greater sense that, “They don’t understand our culture.” Still, that doesn’t mean the Grammys don’t matter.

Even if a Grammy is seen as an acknowledgement from a white, mainstream establishment that many in the hip-hop community hold in low regard, it’s still a major accolade, a giant feather in one's cap. More pragmatically, award shows, with their huge national televison audiences, make stars. Last year, when Complex did The 50 Hottest Rappers Right Now, Ranked According To Google Trends Macklemore landed at No. 6 (three spots ahead of Kendrick) because he saw a huge spike in traffic after winning a couple of VMAs. Now you might say you don’t give a fuck about a Grammy, but seriously, who gives a fuck about a VMA? (Well, except for Kanye, apparently.) But look at what TaylorGate did for the fame and celebrity of everyone involved—Kanye, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce. For better or worse, award shows introduce you to a bigger audience, and Grammys winners always enjoy a healthy sales boost.

Really, it’s Kanye who has the best take on the Grammys. Last year, in an interview with The New York Times he explained, “I don’t care about the Grammys; I just would like for the statistics to be more accurate...I don’t want them to rewrite history right in front of us.”

History is what’s at stake here. Whoever wins the award for Best Rap Album is viable to become the face of hip-hop to a television audience that doesn’t know any better. Grammy awards make memories. Ask the average younger rap fan who Evanescence is, and all they’ll know is how they beat 50 Cent for Best New Artist in 2004 and it was total bullshit. (Even though Evanescence went on to have a pretty successful career). And I’m sure those old guys in Steely Dan are great and all. But I’m sorry, I’m just never ever going to forgive them for beating Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP for Album of the Year in 2001.

It’s worth noting that five of the 18 Grammys for Best Rap Album have gone to Eminem—someone who also enjoys the benefits of white privilege. Eminem certainly deserved to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album for the trifecta of classics at the start of the century: The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show in 2000, 2001, and 2003, respectively. He might have been less deserving in his wins for Relapse and Recovery in 2010 and 2011, but those were weak years for traditional rap releases in general. Em wasn’t facing off against an artistic achievement like good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Either way, Macklemore is no Eminem. Eminem won awards when he was the Best Rapper Alive, something Macklemore isn’t but Kendrick is.

Despite all this, Macklemore and his legion of fans don’t deserve such shabby treatment. The Heist deserves its nominations. You don’t have to be a fan of his music to respect Macklemore’s independent hustle, and it’s easy to appreciate his bold stand on social issues like gay rights—a topic about which hip-hop remains woefully behind-the-times.

NEW YORK (AP) — American troubadour, folk music singer and activist Pete Seeger has died at a hospital in New York. He was 94.

Seeger's grandson, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, says Seeger died Monday night after being hospitalized for six days.

Seeger gained fame as a member of The Weavers, the quartet formed in 1948 and had hits such as "Goodnight Irene."

He continued performing and recording for six decades afterward and was still an activist as recently as October 2011 when he marched in New York City as part of the Occupy Wall Street protests.

He was onstage in January 2009 for a gala Washington concert two days before Barack Obama was inaugurated.

But in the 1950s, his leftist politics got him blacklisted and he was kept off commercial television for more than a decade.
The story began to unfold in February 2012 when federal agents with the Atlanta office of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) began investigating an unknown black female who was opening multiple bank accounts using the stolen identities of real persons for the purposes of depositing over half a million dollars in fraudulently obtained United States Treasury checks.

In a sworn affidavit, a federal agent stated that the female (later identified as Gayla St. Julien) opened 4 bank accounts at the same bank using 2 stolen identities. The agent states that an investigator with JP Morgan Chase Bank (JPMC) contacted his office to ask for assistance in identifying the woman and to investigate the fraudulent activity.

2 JPMC bank accounts were opened on 10/4/2011 in Atlanta using the stolen identity of Bobbie L. C., and 2 JPMC bank accounts were opened in Orlando, Fl. on 2/10/2011 under the name of a “shell” company North Point Volvo, Inc. using the stolen identity of Linda G. S-K.

St. Julien then deposited 22 U.S. Treasury checks, issued to different payees, into the 4 accounts. Most of the deposits and subsequent withdrawals were made in the Atlanta area. The JPMC investigator provided USSS agents with video surveillance of the female making deposits and withdrawals of U.S Treasury checks at different JPMC branches in Atlanta.

THE JPMC investigator advised Secret Service agents that Bobbie L.C. and Linda G. S-K were contacted and it was further verified that their identities had been stolen.

On Feb. 21, 2012, federal agents went to an address listed on the applications used to open the bank accounts at JPMC. They discovered that the address was a UPS store location. The UPS store owner verified that Bobbie L.C. rented a mailbox, #451, at that location. The agents staked out the UPS location and observed a black, middle aged female (later identified as St. Julien) arrive to pick up a package that was mailed to mailbox #451. The agents observed St. Julien enter a blue Mercedes Benz. Agents followed the Mercedes to a Kroger grocery store located at 1160 Moreland Ave, where agents observed St. Julien purchasing various grocery items including diapers and food at a self-serve automated register.

Agents obtained a receipt from the Kroger store manager and they determined that the purchases were made with an EBT Food Stamp card.
On Feb. 27, 2012 agents with the Atlanta office of the Secret Service contacted a special agent with the State Department of Agriculture-OIG to request the account information of the individual who owned the EBT card. The special agent advised that the EBT card belonged to a Gayla O’Neal with the date of birth 04/30/1970. The photo of Gayla O’Neal on her GA driver’s license matched the female suspect seen in the video surveillance photos from the JPMC bank branches. Public records later revealed that Gayla O’Neal married Jeremy St. Julien in May 2013.

A criminal investigator with the GA Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection (GOCP) contacted the Secret Service agent to inform him that St. Julien was under investigation for renting mail boxes at “dozens” of UPS locations all around Atlanta using the stolen identities of real persons. UPS mailbox #283 at 2897 N. Druid Hills Rd., in Atlanta, was connected to a shell company named Onyx Collections & Locator Service used for accessing Equifax databases to obtain personal information on hundreds of individuals.

Agents discovered St. Julien used a separate UPS mailbox #248 at 931 Monroe Drive as the forwarding address for receipt of Onyx mail.
During this time period, Onyx Collections used the LexisNexis database to access personal identities of over 300 individuals. In early 2011, Equifax discovered fraud and closed an account which had been opened under the name of Onyx Collections in September 2009.

In June 2011, both Equifax and LexisNexis terminated Onyx’s access to their databases. An agent with GOPC advised the Secret Service that his agency conducted an undercover operation into a new shell company named “Reliance Recovery and Collections Group Inc.,” that posed as a debt collections agency to again gain access to Equifax and LexisNexis databases to obtain personal identifying information including names, addresses, DOBs, SSNs, employment, and credit histories. The identifiers were stolen by making “inquiries” into credit reports, also known as “soft pulls.”

The GOPC agent advised the Secret Service that one of his investigators acting as an undercover employee of a vetting company met with “Molly P.”, the owner of “Reliance Recovery and Collections Group Inc.” A site visit was required as an Equifax due diligence measure before Reliance Recovery could be approved to gain access to Equifax data. “Molly” was later identified as St. Julien.

St. Julien, posing as “Molly” met with the undercover agent for several minutes and signed documents in his presence. The undercover agent took surveillance pictures of St. Julien and the office, which she apparently rented for the visit.

The scope of St. Julien’s fraudulent activity involved 40 banks and as much as $3 million in illegally obtained proceeds. The banks included Bank of America, BB&T bank, Nationwide Bank, SunTrust Bank, Wells Fargo, and more.

During the course of the investigation, agents discovered that St. Julien was a convicted felon with arrests dating back to 1988 for offenses including running a counterfeit payroll checks scam in Las Vegas, NV.

On August 22, 2013, a SunTrust Bank investigator advised the Secret Service agent that St. Julien, using the stolen identity of Vanessa J., was in the teller line at a SunTrust Bank branch in Atlanta, GA, attempting to withdraw funds from the Signature Tax Collections Inc. account, but was unsuccessful.

The SunTrust account had just received a wire transfer of $25,400.00 from a Wells Fargo bank account in the name of a shell company called Ferrari Autohaus, Inc. On 08/30/13, a Wells Fargo investigator advised that the bank account for Ferrari Autohaus Inc. had sent a $25,000.00 wire transfer to Signature Tax Collections Inc. on 07/22/13 and another $25,400.00 wire transfer to the same account on 08/22/13. On 08/23/13, a SunTrust investigator informed the USSS that “Vanessa J.” went to another SunTrust Bank branch and successfully withdrew $9,500 in cash and wire transferred $8,000 from her Signature Tax Collections Inc. account to an account named “Heritage Recovery” also in the name of “Vanessa J.” The SunTrust bank investigator stated that he froze the remaining funds in the account, and that “Vanessa J.” had been calling every day multiple times a day to various SunTrust bank locations in an attempt to recover those frozen funds.

St. Julien was arrested on Sept. 11, 2013 by the Secret Service. She immediately fingered Apollo Nida as the alleged mastermind who provided her with stolen identities to commit bank and check fraud. St. Julien told investigators she met with Nida on multiple occasions to return the stolen IDs after each usage.

Nida surrendered to U.S. Marshals on Thursday, Jan. 25. He was arraigned the same day and released on $25,000 bond.

Nida is accused of paying U.S. Postal employees to steal retirement checks issued to Delta Airlines employees, and checks in the names of real people that were owed unclaimed property from various state and federal government agencies, according to the criminal complaint.

The pair are additionally charged with applying for loans in the names of stolen identities for the purchase of non-existent vehicles from shell car dealerships or automobile brokers created by Nida.

The shell companies included Acura Carland, Crown Car Dealers, CroWn Pre-Owned Mobiles, Ferrari Autohaus, Final Auto Solutions, Fitzgerald Motors, Goodwin Automall, My Capital Cadillac, My North Point Volvo, My Scarrett Lincoln Mercury and Signature Luxury Imports. In some cases Nida create websites to legitimize some dealerships.

The feds requested additional indictments be sealed as the case is ongoing and other Nida co-conspirators are under investigation, including “several” Real Housewives of Atlanta cast members, according to my source down at the court house.

Nida was previously imprisoned from 2004 to 2009 for RICO federal racketeering charges related to an auto theft ring. He married Phaedra Parks, a local attorney, in 2009 and together they have two children.

“Who here knows about Anita Hill?” asks a teacher to a class of students. That is the opening scene of an upcoming documentary about Anita Hill.

Academy Award winning filmmaker Freida Mock’s soon to be released documentary “Anita” is both a celebration of Hill’s legacy and a rare glimpse into her private life with friends and family.

It’s been 22 years, since Hill bravely took the stand and described the harassment she received at the hands of Thomas. From the pubic hairs left on Coke cans, to recalling the name of his penis, Hill’s life was turned upside down. Throughout the hearings, it became clear, that Hill was the one actually being persecuted, not the accuser.

India.Arie has some ish to say about the snubs at Sunday night's GRAMMY awards. And since she was snubbed 7 out of 7 times 1 year, she has some insight into the politricks of the GRAMMY game.

When Kendrick Lamar and other rappers got shut out of the GRAMMYS on Sunday night...while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis swept the rap categories...plenty of people were perturbed about it all. And it wasn't just the rap categories, it seemed that artists who deserved to win album, video & R&B categories were pushed to the side for white artists or those with more name recognition.

So India.Arie penned an open letter to the GRAMMYS about her feelings on it all. And it's pretty interesting:

@Kendricklamar WAS robbed, BUT he was not the only one who was robbed. Personally, I was pleased he was able to perform and they KILLED! IT! One of the FEW moving moments of the night for ME.

Though it’s called “Music industries biggest night” the #Grammys are NOT about the music, it’s a popularity contest. The voting process allows people, to vote on name recognition alone - the music industry politics is a whole NUTHER conversation. Too much to go into here.

The American Music Awards is a show that awards sales and popularity - the #Grammys are SAID to be about the music.

If the hip hop community voted on hip hop - r&b COMMUNITY the same - same for each category - we’d see winners that reflect the MUSIC ITSELF. We all know that’s just not the way it goes.

NOW the BIGGER losers, are ALL of black music. Where was the black music community represented in last nights #Grammy show? Performers and Winners (or not) … Where were the black artists?

And this isn’t the first time the #Grammy’s has had a show all but excluding young black America and black artists in general, although we set the worlds musical trends. Why NOT televise the lifetime achievement awards of the Isley Brothers? SURELY they deserved to be on televised stage LAST NIGHT! While other artists were on stage TWICE?

The truth is in a perfect world diversity would matter, and respect would be rampant, but the TRUTH is, The #Grammys is a television show, and in THAT world ratings reign supreme. So, in general, bigger names take the stage, and sadly the biggest names often times ARE BIGGER drawn along racial lines from the release of an album. i.e. marketing dollars, and just general support. It’s unfortunate.

I don’t even get surprised any more, but, it still hits my sense of fairness, because I KNOW many of the artists who are overlooked. I LIVE in that world. We keep showing up and subjecting ourselves to the game, hoping MAYBE we’ll win. I was so HAPPY to see @Kendricklamar take that stage - because it is a FORM of winning, at LEAST, he was SEEN.

Speaking of diversity, congratulations to my PERSONAL favorite albums of the year - @I_GregoryPorter #LiquidSpirit @Realsnarkypuppy and @lalahhathaway on your win and THANK YOU! @pharrell for acting RIGHT in the presence of the greatness that is @Nilerodgers and #StevieWonder

Love to all #SoulBirdsWorldWide

@indiaarie
P.S. No mention of Nelson Mandela at ALL? … and THIS is why we NEED the Image Awards AND the BET awards.

Hugh Grant's THREE babies in 15 months: Anna Elisabet Eberstein and Tinglan Hong pregnant with actor's sons at same time
By SAM GREENHILL

If fatherhood came late to Hugh Grant, he is making up for lost time.

The 53-year-old actor has gone from being childless to a father of three in the space of just 15 months. His third love-child was revealed yesterday – a son born to Swedish television producer Anna Eberstein.

She would have been pregnant at the same time as Grant’s other lover Tinglan Hong, who gave birth to his son Felix Chang three months afterwards. Miss Hong is also the mother of Grant’s first child.

The third baby has only been revealed because the Notting Hill star suddenly named himself on the boy’s birth certificate, more than a year after he was born.
When the baby was first registered, the father’s name was left blank. Yet Grant, who found fame with the film Four Weddings and a Funeral, and his Swedish girlfriend appear to have been an item for at least two years.

It is not known if 33-year-old Miss Hong was aware of his affair with Miss Eberstein, who is in her mid-thirties. There was no immediate comment from Grant or his spokesman yesterday and, on leaving her home on Wednesday night Miss Eberstein would only say: ‘Sorry, I have to go.’

And so it fell to Miss Eberstein’s proud mother Susanne in Sweden to focus attention on the grandson she has been sworn to keep secret for more than a year. He was, she said simply, a ‘wonderful little cute boy’.

The pin-up actor has dated a string of beautiful women during a glittering Hollywood career. But he turned 50 in 2010 still unmarried and childless.

That quickly changed. Grant’s first child, daughter Tabitha, was born to Miss Hong in September 2011. Within four months of the birth, Miss Eberstein was pregnant by him.

Three months after that he got Miss Hong pregnant again. And for around five months in 2012, the two women’s pregnancies overlapped.

During this time, in April 2012, the actor told a US chat show: ‘Everyone was right all these years, saying, “Hugh, why don’t you have some children? It changes your life.” Now that I have a child, it is life-changing. I recommend it. Get some.’

Five months later, in September 2012, his son by Miss Eberstein was born. His son by Miss Hong, Felix Chang, followed about 12 weeks later in December.
Both mothers and their children live within walking distance of Grant’s townhouse in Fulham, West London.

According to her online profile, she worked at ESPN, the American TV channel as a promotions producer’ before leaving in September to become a freelance producer.

When her son was born in 2012, his birth certificate was left blank in the section for the father, but last month the birth was mysteriously re-registered.
Grant visited the register office in person with his girlfriend to remedy the omission.

This time, the little boy – who the Mail is not naming – was given Grant’s surname and his father was listed as Hugh John Mungo Grant, occupation ‘actor’.

The mother is named as Anna Elisabet Eberstein, occupation ‘television producer’, born in Sweden.

She is the daughter of Susanne Eberstein, a judge and prominent left-wing politician.

She and her husband Hans – also a judge – earn an estimated £320,000 a year between them and own a number of properties including a beach house.
As members of Sweden’s ‘great and good’, they have dined with the royal family at Stockholm’s castle several times.

Their daughter met Grant in London, possibly through their mutual love of tennis.

Miss Hong, who was born in eastern China and moved to Britain in 2003, is understood to have met Grant in a Chelsea wine bar in 2008.

VH1 introduces ‘Atlanta Exes’ with exes from Usher, Ne-Yo, Cee Lo Green, Kevin Hart

VH1 already has two successful Atlanta-based reality shows: “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” and “T.I. & Tiny.”

Enter No. 3: “Atlanta Exes,” featuring the exes of famous men. This is a spinoff of the original “Hollywood Exes.” It debuts this summer.
The five are:

- Monyetta Shaw (ex-fiance of Ne-Yo) She was engaged to him but they broke up abruptly last summer before the BET Awards, according to Straight From the A. She’s dubbed an “author and businesswoman.”

- Tameka Raymond Foster (ex-wife of Usher). She’s the biggest get on the show because her husband is a huge star and they’ve had a very public custody battle over the children. The press release touts her charity foundation.

- Christina Johnson (ex of Cee Lo Green) She had a son Kingston with Green in 2000. They divorced in 2005. She is described in the press release as an “interior decorator to the stars.”

- Sheree Buchanan (ex-wife of Falcons star Ray Buchanan). She was on “The Amazing Race,” season four so she has some reality show experience. The press release says she “co-owns a dessert catering company and also has a business that specializes in creating custom bedazzled hookah pipes.”

- Torrei Hart (ex-wife of comedian Kevin Hart). She’s an actress with imdb credits thought nothing big. When I spoke with Kevin Hart in 2012 while he promoted “Think Like a Man,” he referenced his ex thusly: “We’re both adults and we’ve matured a lot,” he said. “We’re not fighting over this and that. I didn’t walk away without taking care of her.” She recently told BuzzTV that he was good in bed, too.
