Nina Simone's Only Child Slams Her, Says Singer Could Be A ‘Monster’

Reported by Andrew Scot Bolsinger
July 14, 2014

The troubled life of American singer Nine Simone remains troubled today, more than a decade after her death.

The so-called “high priestess of soul,” who battled depression and alcoholism throughout her life, left behind a lengthy battle for her estate and a biopic movie that has now stalled to be released because of a legal battle surrounding it.

Simone was known for hits My Baby Just Cares For Me, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and I Put a Spell on You. Her troubles off the stage were less known, including a “a tortured relationship with her only child, Lisa,” according to a story in the Daily Mail.

“My mother could be a monster,” Simone’s daughter said in a recent interview.

Simone died at the age of 70 in 2003, leaving a large family estate that has been fought over in court for years. Her daughter Lisa was disinherited from the will, according to published reports.

Lisa Simone, who followed her mother into the music business, did so largely without her support, she said, despite enduring her abuse as a child during her erratic childhood. Lisa told reporters that she had 13 governesses by the age of seven and walked out on her mom when she was just 14.

“‘I’d like to think if she had taken two seconds to think about her behavior she would have done things differently but I’m not sure,” Lisa said. “My mother was angry with the world and often the only person around to blame was me.”

Simone’s troubled life is played by Zoe Saldana in the yet-to-released movie, Nina, which, according to published reports, was due to be released in March.

“The release date was postponed when writer and director Cynthia Mort became locked in a protracted legal dispute with the producers,” the Daily Mail reported.

Simone is credited with developing a mix of jazz, gospel, blues, folk and soul to create her signature sound, which she dubbed, “black classical music.”

Her music career took off in the 1950s and ‘60s, and she used her fame to become an outspoken civil rights activist, including writing music about the racism of the time.

Starting in 1970s with her career on the decline, Simone moved with her daughter to places like Barbados, Liberia and Geneva, where she enrolled Lisa in an international boarding school.

Lisa eventually moved back to the U.S., as an engineer in the Air Force.

She quit the military in 1992, at age 29, initially to become a backing singer, performing under the name Simone Kelly.

In 2001, Lisa earned the lead in the Broadway production of Elton John’s musical hit Aida.

Two years later, Simone died from breast cancer.

Lisa sued the estate of her mother and won a judgement in 2006, only to be sued by other family members.

I thought it was well known Nina Simone had mental issues (schizophrenic) and feuded with her daughter. I always find it interesting when children bash their parents publicly and then take their parents stage name for their own careers. Simone wasn't mother or daughter's legal name. Alice Walker's daughter did the same. I'd love to listen in on their therapy sessions. Laughing

Number two! Vanessa Minnillo is pregnant again, expecting her second child with husband Nick Lachey.

Lachey announced the news of the pregnancy on Twitter on Tuesday, July 15. He shared a photo on the beach with "It's a girl" written in the sand, and captioned the shot, "Can't think of a better way to celebrate 3 years of marriage to my beautiful @VanessaLachey than this! #family." The television personality, 33, gave birth to her first child, son Camden John, in September 2012 and wed Lachey, now 40, in July 2011.

Following her son's birth, Minnillo dealt with emotional struggles, opening up about her personal problems in a blog post entitled "Inside Story: My Experience with Baby Blues."
"No matter how many books you read, NOTHING prepares you better than the real thing," she wrote in March 2013 about her first experience with motherhood. "I felt lost, unloved, alone and at my wits end."

"I didn't feel like myself," she continued. "Where was the super woman who always thought and knew she could do it all? Where was the organized Vanessa who had it all under control no matter what the obstacle? She was gone, and I thought… forever."
The mother and career woman was celebrated for her brave confession, and she made it through her son's infancy. Camden is now 22 months, and Minnillo has clearly decided that childbirth is worth another go.

In recent months, Mrs. Lachey has gushed about her baby boy on social media, sharing adorable photos of Camden with his father.
"My wife's maternal side is a new dynamic to her personality," Lachey told Parents magazine earlier this year. "It's definitely made her even sexier."

Lachey has been outspoken with his love for Camden, as well, telling the Huffington Post in July 2013, "[Love for Camden] is just all-encompassing. You would do anything for your children -- not that you wouldn't for your wife or someone else you love but there's a sense of protectiveness and responsibility that comes with your child which you don't feel in any other relationship. He has changed my life in every possible way."

Actress and former Miss America Vanessa Williams has spoken out about being molested by an 18-year-old girl when she was only ten-years-old and how it's had a negative impact on her psychologically.

Vanessa Williams opened up on Oprah's Master Class and spoke about a traumatic summer before she entered the fifth grade when a much older 'cool girl' performed oral sex on her when she was staying with her friend's family's friends in California.

Even though Williams thought that her friend's family friend's daughter was 'cool' at first she knew that what happened between them 'wasn't supposed to be happening.'

'She was one of the cool girls,' said Williams.

'She made you want to feel like you were a grown-up.'

One night when Williams and her friend were sleeping, the older girl sneaked into their room and woke Williams with a strange request.

'She told me to lie down on the floor. She took my bottoms off and she said, 'Be quiet,' Williams says. 'She went down on me.'
Williams couldn't really understand what was happening and was conflicted about the encounter.

'I had no idea what it was, but I knew it felt good,' she says.

'I knew it felt good, but was also something that was not supposed to be happening.'

Williams never told her parents about what happened because the moment she stepped off the plane she learned of a family tragedy and didn't have the courage to bring up the incident with her family.

'I saw my dad's face and his face was gray. And I just found out that his brother had died,' said Williams.

'That was a family drama. I never really talked to my dad about it. I kind of suppressed it.'

Williams says that the incident sexualized her at an inappropriately early age and that in a way it took away some of her innocence.

'It awakens your sexuality at an age where it shouldn't be awakened,' said Williams.

'Had that not happened in my life and had I had an opportunity to have a normal courtship with a boyfriend at 16 or whatever... there wouldn't have been that shame that was always haunting me. It made me more sexually promiscuous and more sexually curious at a younger age than I should have been.'

Kim Kardashian stands to make around $85 MILLION from the new video game iPhone app that boasts her namesake ... more than she made last year in all of her other ventures combined ... TMZ has learned.

Sources familiar with the deal tell TMZ ... Kim's cut is 45% of net profits. The game -- "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood" -- is set to gross a reported $200 million this year alone.

We're told the actual expenses associated with the business are relatively low. A straight 45% cut of $200 million totals a whopping $90 million. Industry sources tell TMZ ... expenses would not exceed $10 million.

So ... we're no mathematicians, but 45% of $190 million is $85.5 MILLION FREAKING DOLLARS.

To put this in context ... according to Forbes, Kim made $28 million last year.

As you know ... the game is all about becoming a virtual celebrity, but it costs real money to buy your way to the top.

Now the bad news for Kim. We're told she has to pay her agent, Uncle Sam and, of course, Kris.

‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Star Apollo Nida Ordered to Pay $2 Million for Fraud Scheme

Nida, who appears on the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” with his wife Phaedra Parks, has been ordered to pay nearly $2 million in restitution, after he was convicted of conspiring to commit mail, wire and bank fraud.

Nida must pay $1.95 million, with various amounts going to, among many others, JP Morgan Chase (to which Nida owes $828.000), the IRS, Delta Airlines, and the states of California, Connecticut and Texas.
The restitution is “due and payable immediately,” according to court papers obtained by TheWrap.

The “Real Housewives” personality's restitution hearing was scheduled for Thursday, but it has since been cancelled.

As TheWrap previously reported, Nida was sentenced to eight years in federal prison on July 8. He had faced up to a 30 year sentence.
According to United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates, beginning in August 2009, Nida and others obtained stolen checks by taking them or buying them from other criminal associates. The stolen checks involved in the scheme included United States Treasury checks, as well as checks stolen from the pension fund of Delta Airlines. They also obtained funds by filing fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service and making fraudulent claims against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and at least eleven states, all in the names of victims whose identities had been stolen.

I'm sure most casting calls are like this, probably better to do it through agencies rather than your facebook page. She should have known that colorism (in an A-D) form is unacceptable. And why did D list POOR as an attribute? WTF! Confused

Like I said on grandroyal's fb post last week, black women get treated like shit and the only folks standing up for us is US. Those of us who aren't sell-outs.

There are plenty of better ways they could have worded that casting call.
